IT RESOURCES ON CAMPUS

Depending on your needs, there are many IT resources available on campus. These resources include IT consulting, application programming, hands-on computing workshops, and network infrastructure support, just to name a few.

Administrative Computing Services (ACS): Responsible for the design, operation, and evolution of systems and services that support the University's business function.

Campus Computing Services: Campus Computing Services are a division of the Office of Information Technology. Each campus has a local "Computing Services" department dedicated to addressing the needs of that campus. Many of the "central systems" on campus are actually central to each campus, as opposed to University-wide, and are run by the Campus Computing Services units. See their respective web sites for more information:

Central Systems: Centralized computing services available to the entire University. Your department may offer some of these services, such as email, on its own.

Enterprise Systems and Services (ESS): Responsible for the design, operation, and evolution of central information technology facilities supporting the University Community. It is part of the Office of Information Technology.

Information Protection and Security (IPS): Responsible for managing information assurance, developing policies, and establishing goals and objectives to maintain a secure academic information environment.

LAN Support Services (LSS): Offers firewall design, installation, and management services. Also available to consult or manage network transitions.

Microcomputer Support Services Group (MSSG): Provides departmental support services to all University departments, including IT consulting, planning, manage software site licenses, and additional services on a contract or hourly-charge basis.

Office of Information Technology: Under the leadership of the Vice President of Information Technology, Michael McKay, the Office of Information Technology (OIT) works closely with faculty, senior administrators, the university's key stakeholders and users of computer technology in developing policies, standards, processes, and procedures. OIT is part of the Office of Administrative Affairs. It is also the parent organization of Campus Computing Services, Enterprise Systems and Services, and the Office of Instructional and Research Technology.

Office of Instructional and Research Technology: Coordinates academic use of IT throughout the University to support instruction and research. OIRT staff work with individual instructors, researchers, departments, and other units.

Open Systems Support: Provides support for "open systems," such as Solaris, Linux, HPUX and IRIX. They also coordinate issuancs of SSL Certificate's through Thawte's SPKI program.

Rutgers Computer Repair: Rutgers has its own computer repair service. They are an authorized repair center for many vendors and handle both in- and out-of-warranty repairs. Additionally, they can build custom computers. All the products and services they offer are also available to students, faculty and staff for personal purchase.

Telecommunications Division: Responsible for the design, operation, and evolution of the University's central data, voice, and video networks.

Wireless Networking: The University operates some centrally-managed wireless networks for use by the Rutgers community and maintains policies for their use.
