CENTRAL SYSTEMS

NetID

The NetID is a university-wide identification that will be used to login to computer applications and services throughout the university. It is commonly referred to as the username on the central servers (andromeda, clam, crab, eden, pegasus, rci, and rulink), though it is much more widely used. All students, faculty, and staff must have a NetID as a matter of policy and to access various web applications and tools around the University. (Please note, because the account creation application uses payroll records to verify authorizaiton to create a NetID, you'll need a manager to sign a form in order to get your NetID prior to the two to three week period it would take to do it the normal way.)

Central User Systems

These are centrally hosted and managed mail/www/ftp user systems. There are a pair of systems per campus, one for students and one for faculty and staff. The systems are 'clam' and 'crab' for Camden, 'andromeda' and 'pegasus' for Newark, and 'rci' and 'eden' for New Brunswick/Piscataway. Although some departments or units choose to run their own systems for such purposes, these are usually the most convenient in terms of administrative overhead. The central user systems are just one of the types of central resources that require the use of a NetID. Someone using a central system for their email would have an email address of yournetid@clam.rutgers.edu or yournetid@andromeda.rutgers.edu, for example.
