TELECOMMUNICATIONS DIVISION

The Telecommunications Division is a university business unit with the responsibility for the design, implementation, operation, maintenance and evolution of central voice, video, and data networks.

The Telecommunications Division has a number of policies regarding the proper use and regulation of the Rutgers networks. It is important for IT professionals, as well as members of the University community in general, to be familiar with these policies. A listing of the polices can be found on the TD website. Priority should be given to getting familiar with the Acceptable Use Policies (both the University's and RUCS'), Privacy Policy and the Network Bandwidth Utilization Policy.

The TD website also has a considerable amount of documentation and reference material on the Rutgers network (RUNet). One document is particularly important for IT professionals at the University, and that is the Use of Private RFC-1918 Addresses at Rutgers. This document explains how "private address space" is utilized at Rutgers. Basically, certain segments of what is normally considered non-routable address space is managed and routed within the RUNet and treated like standard public address space. This is done to accomodate the ever growing number of networked devices.
