OIT Technology Meeting - May 2006
Announcements
Josh Hogle, MSSG
The University's site license for McAfee antivirus software expires June 30, 2006. The University is
switching from McAfee to Trend Micro. Trend software has features that are not available in the
McAfee software. The Trend firewall is built into the antivirus software instead of an additional
product. It has better anti-spyware features. It also uses much less CPU than McAfee. Trend does not
have a product for Mac OS, so MSSG is recommending the use of ClamXAV, which is a GUI written around
ClamAV, an established Unix/Linux product. ClamXAV is available for free. There are products available
for Windows, Exchange, Netware, Red Hat and Suse Linux, and Solaris. Available products include
antivirus, spam prevention and content filtering.
RADS will be updated for Trend. The new RADS 4.0, which is still in development, will uninstall
existing antivirus software and install the Trend software. RADS 4.0 will be available for faculty,
staff and students, on both University and personally owned equipment.
All McAfee products must be removed by July 1, 2006. RADS 4.0 will be available by June 5, 2006. In
addition to an exe version, an msi version will be available for those wishing to deploy via Active
Directory. A beta version of the install is currently available, though not all features are complete
at this time. It may be downloaded from
ftp://software.rutgers.edu/pub/rutgers/rads/4.0/SetupNT-BETA1.msi. Documentation can be found at
http://mssg.rutgers.edu/documentation/antivirus/. Additional documentation will continue to be
added. Questions may be sent to antivirus_support@rutgers.edu.
Dr. Charles Hedrick, OIRT
The IP address of ldap.rutgers.edu will be changing in June. Those pointing to it using the hostname
do not need to do anything. The change should be transparent. Those using the current IP address
should switch to using the hostname.

IT Strategic Plan
Michael McKay, VP for IT
The IT Strategic Planning Committee (ITSPC) has released a draft of the University's IT Strategic Plan.
The plan was worked on by a committee of 50+ faculty, staff and students. There are committees for
Teaching and Learning, Research, University Life, Business and Enterprise Services, and Governance.
Budgeting has been an obvious challenge, and suggestions for ways to save money are welcome. The plan
lists five goals and 17 recommendations. There is a forum in Sakai for public discussion. The final
report is due in the summer. The report is available from
http://oit.rutgers.edu/strategicgoals.html.
