OIT Technology Meeting - October 2006
Announcements
Galen Work, OIT
OIT and Purchasing are working on a "master lease initiative" to purchase technology resources. This will address the issue of
only being able to purchase when you have a large sum of money on hand. They are just getting started with the process, but are
looking for volunteers who will be willing to provide feedback. No meetings will be involved, only emails. Please contact Galen
gwork@rutgers.edu
if you're willing to participate.
Beth Binde, IPS
IPS will resume some form of vulnerability scanning. The approach this time will be different. Instead of wide sweeping scans
looking for all sorts of vulnerabilities, the scans this time will only focus on the most recently discovered critical
vulnerability. Nessus releases a plug-in for free a week after a new vulnerability is discovered. They offer one sooner, but it
requires a subscription of $1200/year. If the first round of scanning proves productive, IPS will explore the option of
purchasing a subscription. They will also employ a plug-in that is supposed to detect and skip over printers and Netware servers
when the vulnerability is something that is specific to Windows. For hosts found to be vulnerable, they will contact the listed
technical contact. If there is no response or remidiation within a week, they will follow up with the administrative contact.
The plan is to do a round of scanning on or around October 18, 2006 and start with the MS vulnerability listed in MS06-040.

HP will be hosting a half day technical briefing on campus on October 19 in the Life Sciences Building. It is requested that
you RSVP if you are attending. Please see the agenda for
the topics and registration information.

Presentations
Microsoft Campus Agreement
Frank Reda, NBCS
Frank discussed the pending campus agreement with Microsoft. The details can be found in his
presentation (pdf format).
The funding source for the first year is still in question, so the support of the departments is needed. Please discuss with
your deans and department heads to encourage them to support the initiative.
NJ Identy Theft Law
Bruce Rights, IPS
The University has adopted a new policy as a result of the NJ Identity Theft Law. Bruce touched on a number of points. See the
presentation (pdf format) for the details.
SSL Certificate Portal
Josh Hogle, MSSG
The ability to obtain SSL certificates is being integrated into the
University Software Portal. Thawte certificates (currently managed by OSS) as well as certificates signed by a Rutgers
Certificate Authority (CA) will both be available from the portal. The cost of the Thawte certs will remain the same. If you
use the Scarlet Page service, the certificate to recognize the Rutgers
CA will automatically be installed in IE. The first time you order a certificate from the portal you will need to fill out and
sign a form and fax it back to MSSG. You'll also be able to generate a CSR right on the portal.
RULink Outlook Connector
Tom Grzelak, OIRT
RULink has tools that will interface between Outlook and the software suite RULink uses. The software is in beta right now
and can be found on RULink. The beta period
ends later this month. Any feedback on the Outlook Connector software, documentation on the RULink site, etc. would be
greatly appreciated and should be sent to
rulink-support@rutgers.edu.
