OIT Technology Meeting - June 2007

As usual, we will be breaking for the summer. The OIT Technical Meetings will resume in the fall.
There will be a Dell technical presentation on June 20 in the Busch Campus Center. Breakfast and lunch will be provided, and they will raffle off a laptop.

Galen Work, OIT
A new website has been created, http://findtech.rutgers.edu that will be a resource for technology purchasing. There are links to the vendor pricing sites. Some of the vendors are giving their most aggressive pricing via their educational pricing sites. There are also links to make personal purchase where you will receive the discounted educational pricing. Apple has released a new MAC Book pro and will be updating their prices and configurations this week. Please note footnotes on the findtech website for changes in configurations.

Unified Email/Caledaring System Issues
Stan Kolasa, Central Systems

While RULink provides email and calendaring services, users have been requesting additional services such as PDA and mobile device support. Stan's team have begun the process of investigating other solutions such as Exchange and other solutions. Some factors being taken into consideration are the existing infrastructure, price, development cycle, and scalability. A lot of excellent has already been received regarding user requirements.

Interscan Messaging Security Suite
Tim Mills, MSSG

Tim gave a presentation showing Trend Micro's SPAM solution. The latest version, IMSS 7.0 is available through the University Software Portal and available at no charge as part of our antivirus contract. IMSS uses a network reputation service that allows SPAM to be dropped before it gets to your mail server. The product runs on Windows 2000, 2003 as well as Suse, Redhat and Solaris systems.
Microsoft eLearning for Software Assurance Customers
Susan Schwerdt, MSSG

Under the campus agreement through Jan. 2010, Faculty and Staff can create an eLearning login account at no charge by visiting the University Software Portal. Features of the E-Learning catalog allow you to download e-learning modules as well as an offline player for viewing the modules. Send feedback to software[at]mssg.rutgers.edu.
